Help! Stinky sea shells?
Meagan asked:
I collected lots of lovely seashells at the sea shore, but they STINK! How can I get rid of the smell? I thought about bleaching them, but I’m afraid that would fade them.

Bleach won’t fade them…the color is part of the shell.
But check first to see if the shells still have the “critters” inside…you may have a conch or spider crab inside that is dead and smelly.
Bleach would certainly fade them if it’s too strong. I would recommend checking out for the proper strength. Her website can tell you how to clean anything. She had the seashell-cleaning hint in her column last summer, but I don’t recall what it was.
